Juan Ramos, 78
Type 2 Diabetes patient of 28 years

For Juan Ramos of the Philippines, being diagnosed with diabetes when he was 50 did not come as a total surprise. It was a condition which ran in his family. "Three of us five brothers have diabetes, and several of my cousins have it too. Diabetes is something that’s always on my mind."

Instead of letting it affect him, Mr. Ramos actively began to learn more about diabetes, treatments, medical findings and health equipment. As vice-president of San Miguel Corporation, it sometimes proved to be a challenge because he had to attend dinners and entertain clients.

He started to adjust to his new diet, taking less sugar, fat, protein and alcohol as well as conscientiously avoiding harmful foods. "I'm not so happy about it, but I have to accept it if I were to live a normal span of life," Mr Ramos commented.

Aside from watching his diet and taking occasional walks, Mr. Ramos has also been checking his blood sugar level regularly with ONETOUCH ULTRA to ensure that his glucose levels are normal. "The key to control is regular monitoring," he added. "It's more affordable than a laboratory test, it can be done as and when I want to, and the results are very close."

After being on oral medications for the past 27 years, Juan knew it would be natural to face complications like eye problems and renal failure. "I was ready for it because I’ve been reading all these years on diabetes. Complications will eventually come and if you don’t watch out, the treatment will be more complex," he added.

"My doctor told me I have practically exhausted all the oral medications," he shares. Juan was recently advised by his doctor to also take insulin. As usual he took this in stride, after all, insulin was another ally to maintain the lifestyle he loves.

Mr. Ramos has been using ONETOUCH ULTRA for nine years.
